Attractions

Standley Chasm

Located 50 kms west by sealed road from Alice Springs, Standley Chasm is the main attraction on an Aboriginal-owned and operated flora and fauna reserve.

An inspiration regardless of weather or time of day, the chasm is at it's most dramatic an hour either side of noon on a sunny day when the sheer walls glow with reflected sunlight to create a breathtaking display of stark form and rich colour.

This remarkable feature has been eroded by the flow of water along a relatively soft dolerite dyke that intruded a major crack in the Chewings Range Quartzite about 900 million years ago. The dolerite has since been eroded away, leaving sheer quartzite cliffs that tower 80 metres above the creek bed.

As well as having a great scenic appeal, Standley Chasm and its rugged surrounds provide protected habitats for a rich variety of rare and relict plant species such as Cycad Palms and the Flannel Flower.

The 15 minute walk to the chasm follows a creek bed where spring fed pools of water attract a great variety of wildlife, particularly birds.

Enjoy a lunch at the kiosk or refreshing morning and afternoon teas. BBQ facilities are available.
